Before and after photos are one of the most important tools for evaluating a plastic surgeon and setting realistic expectations for your own results. However, not all before-and-after galleries are created equal. Knowing how to critically evaluate these photos helps you choose a better surgeon, understand what is achievable, and avoid disappointment.
What to Look for in Quality Before-and-After Photos
- Consistent lighting and angles: Professional medical photography uses standardized lighting and angles. If before photos are dimly lit and after photos are brightly lit, results may appear more dramatic than they actually are.
- Multiple views: Comprehensive galleries show frontal, profile, three-quarter, and sometimes basal views. A single flattering angle can hide issues visible from other perspectives.
- Similar patients to you: Look for patients with your body type, age, skin quality, and similar starting anatomy. These cases give the most realistic preview of your potential outcome.
- Consistent timeframes: Photos taken at the same post-operative interval allow fair comparison. Results at 3 months look different from results at 12 months.
- Volume of examples: A surgeon with dozens of examples in their gallery demonstrates consistent results, not just cherry-picked best cases.
Red Flags in Before-and-After Galleries
- Dramatically different lighting or makeup: The after photo should not have heavy makeup, filters, or significantly better lighting.
- Very few examples: A small gallery may indicate limited experience with that procedure.
- No unedited photos: Galleries should show unretouched medical photographs, not social media-quality filtered images.
- Only dramatic transformations: A gallery showing only extreme cases may not represent the surgeon's typical results.
- Stock photos or photos from other surgeons: Every photo should be the surgeon's own work. Ask if you are unsure.
